Linkage with other universities, Leipzig University in Germany

Linkage with other universities in Rwanda and all over the world is one of the strategies INES uses in teaching methodology where INES-Ruhengeri students learn or get added stills from other students. From 2nd to 13th September 2017, delegation of INES students attended the summer school in Leipzig University, Germany. Leipzig University was founded in 1409, making it one of the oldest universities in Germany.

The summer school, focusing on questions of globalization and transnationalization, has over the last years become the trademark of the Graduate School and is jointly hosted by several units. It is divided in plenary events (often with the participation of reputable guest speakers) and numerous panels focusing on different topics, which are organized by the PhD candidates and offer the opportunity to invite junior researchers from other institutions.

INES-Ruhengeri through its incubation center, INES Business Incubation Center, trains students on how to turn idea into business and how to do business. In collaboration with The African German Entrepreneurship Academy (AGEA) INES-Ruhengeri organized this workshop and facilitate students from Rwanda to meet other students from Ghana and German.

After local selection of good business ideas, three groups from INES-Ruhengeri, one from Musanze Polytechnic, and APRC East went to the next step of attending summer school in German to present their projects and get added ideas on how the projects can turned into business.

Three students from department of Biotechnology at INES-Ruhengeri are working on Citric acid. Citric acid is an organic acid produced either traditionally (from citrus fruits), chemically ( petroleum) or biotechnologically by fermentation of sugary products by certain species of molds with Aspergillus niger.

Because citric acid is normal metabolite, to produce it, drastic conditions are provided to the mold to make the citric acid overproduced. This project will use canemolasses from Kabuye Sugar Works and Aspergillus moulds from the overripen oranges from Musanze agroproducts market. The project is at research stage of implementation and is runned by Irakoze Marie Lys, Kavutse Steve and Igihozo Aimée Honnête , all with food biotechnology background from INES Ruhengeri.
