INES-RUHENGERI LANGUAGE CENTER
From the time of Beligium colonial rule, French was predominantly the medium of instruction (MoI) in Rwanda. Then, in October 2008, Rwandan cabinet resolution called for immediate implementation of English as the language of instruction in Rwandan system of education from primary to tertiary. Our country which is one of the members of commonwealth and East African Community where English language is used, has to keep motivating all individuals to use that language in all domains of life such as education, business, diplomacy, etc. It is in this regard that INES-Ruhengeri has just opened a Language Center (LC) so that it can help its students, staff members and the surrounding populations enhance their proficiency in English language which is needful these days.
Coming back to educational setting, speaking English allows you to actually broaden your world, from job opportunities to the ability to relate with people from every country. INES-Ruhengeri Language Center needs to produce students who are ready and capable of competing for those opportunities around the world. The statistics reveal that more than a quarter of the world’s population speaks English which means that about 1.6 billion people understand and relate with the help of the English language of Shakespeare. To not mention that most of the films are in English, the largest film industry, Hollywood, is produced in English. Education is very important to improve yourself but learning English also improves the quality of life.
The benefits and knowledge that INES students and others are going to get from its Language Center are countless. What is important to understand is that the English language is able to knock down a lot of barriers, including cultural ones.
The lack of knowledge of the English language, and not being fluent, always kept and still keep some university undergraduates and graduates back from participating, and from applying for courses in developed countries where a mastery of English language is a must. English is taught and learnt at INES-Ruhengeri and it has helped its students to raise their confidence and communication skills. The Language Center at INES-Ruhengeri has come to supplement and help its students and staff to polish extensively all knowledge, attitudes and skills they have in English language. As it is known in this institution of sciences, knowledge should not only be in the paper, but it must also be in the people or students practically. This language center with its courses and trainings have to base on doing or practicing rather than knowing and this will lead all students to learn to speak, listen, read, and write in ways that are immediately useful in a real world setting.
Our courses in this language center will mainly focus on building academic writing, critical reading, listening comprehension, oral communication skills for undergraduate students and the staff at large. Before attending this INES-Ruhengeri Language Center, Language Center coordination in conjunction with the department of languages will give an English placement test to the students, staff and other outsiders of INES who need to join this center for their specific purposes towards English language. This language placement test only helps the student and the instructor determine the level of English of that student. This test can either place you at the beginner, elementary, intermediate, advanced or proficient level. So, it is better to learn English academically and specifically when you actually know your level in it and how you can make an effort which can enable you to shift from one level to another. By experiencing different teaching and learning materials prepared in English language by the native speakers of English will undoubtedly open the horizon of our clients who are students.
The INES-Ruhengeri students, staff and the community members who will need to further their studies or hunt jobs in America, Europe, Asia and Australia continents will not face any challenges associated with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exams which are prepared by USA Embassy and British Council to assess the English language proficiency of the people who want to go to the countries or universities where English language is used. Those who pass that exam well with required grades or scores, they are often given free or fully funded scholarships, residency permit and working permit, etc. Therefore, you can notice that English language has just been a password of good life for people or students. By doing so, the placement test will comprise of 4 sections namely listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written essay and oral interview.
All these courses, INES Language Center is going to provide will often be basing on raising the capacity, proficiency and English communication skills of its students in general so that they can be competent at the market level in Rwanda and beyond its borders as it is known that education has no limit. It is in this regard this language center has been opened such that it can help students put off all challenges or limitations that they can unpredictably come on their way. Academically and socially speaking, each and everybody need to be able to initiate interactions with people from other cultures but also to engage with them on having good human values of the place in which they can be and be appointed to.
In a nutshell, we can say education is very important to improve yourself but learning English also improves the quality of life as it has been noted above. All students are reminded that they are the bedrocks of this learning and conducive journey.
