INES Computer Science Students Engage with the Blockchain Industry

30 May 2024

INES-Ruhengeri, through INES-INNOVIC, organized an event aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry for Computer Science students. In this regard, experts from ICP Rwanda were hosted to deliver a transformative session on blockchain technology.

On May 29, 2024, the Computer Lab at INES-Ruhengeri was abuzz with excitement as Dr. Habimana Theodore, Head of the Department and Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, welcomed the team from the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP). Dr. Habimana, who holds a PhD in Telecommunication Engineering, introduced this significant event, which focused on exploring the workings of blockchain technology and how Computer Science students can develop software using this revolutionary technology.

The ICP Rwanda community, committed to fostering knowledge and expertise in blockchain technology, particularly the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), played a pivotal role in this event. The community is passionate about spreading awareness and empowering individuals, especially students, with the skills and understanding necessary to thrive in the blockchain industry.

The session provided immense value to INES students from the Computer Science department, enhancing their understanding and skills in this cutting-edge technology. Mr. Nkurunziza Fabrice, Innovation and Talent Development Officer, emphasized that this initiative aligns with INES Ruhengeri's vision of bridging the gap between academia and industry. He illustrated this vision with a vivid metaphor: “This strategy allows labor market actors to step into the kitchen and actively participate in preparing a meal that will satisfy their hunger.” In other words, the session enabled industry professionals to train students before graduation, ensuring they acquire the skills demanded by the labor market.

Approximately 90 second-year students from the Computer Science department attended the session, representing various specializations including Industrial IT, Software Engineering, and Network Engineering. These students gained valuable insights and practical knowledge, making the session a resounding success.

This event underscores INES-Ruhengeri’s commitment to providing its students with the latest technological advancements and practical skills, preparing them to excel in the rapidly evolving tech industry.
