Musanze, December 18, 2024 – In a strategic move to address the growing need for professional microfinance education and research, INES-Ruhengeri and the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Rwanda (AMIR) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership will establish a Master of Microfinance program, a first of its kind in Rwanda and the East and Central Africa region, aimed at shaping future leaders in the microfinance sector.
The MoU was signed at INES-Ruhengeri by Dr. Uwilingiyimana Charline, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Research, and Mr. Jackson Kwikiriza, Executive Director of AMIR. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in efforts to professionalize microfinance practices and promote financial inclusion, a critical component of Rwanda’s economic transformation agenda.

Professionalizing Microfinance
The partnership between INES-Ruhengeri, a renowned applied sciences
institution, and AMIR, the umbrella body for microfinance institutions in
Rwanda, seeks to bridge the gap in skills, governance, and ethics in the
microfinance industry.
“This program is not only about equipping professionals with advanced
knowledge but also about fostering innovation and ethical practices that will
transform the microfinance sector,” said Dr. Uwilingiyimana Charline.
Mr. Jackson Kwikiriza emphasized the sector’s need for trained experts,
adding, “This partnership will significantly contribute to the development of
competent professionals who can drive financial inclusion and sustainable
growth across Rwanda and beyond.”

The MoU outlines a three-year collaboration during which INES-Ruhengeri
and AMIR will jointly develop a curriculum tailored to the needs of the
microfinance industry. The program will integrate academic rigor with practical
insights, supported by research, capacity-building initiatives, and stakeholder
engagement.
