Musanze, December 18, 2024 – In a strategic move to address the growing need for professional microfinance education and research, INES-Ruhengeri and the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Rwanda (AMIR) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership will establish a Master of Microfinance program, a first of its kind in Rwanda and the East and Central Africa region, aimed at shaping future leaders in the microfinance sector.

The MoU was signed at INES-Ruhengeri by Dr. Uwilingiyimana Charline, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Research, and Mr. Jackson Kwikiriza, Executive Director of AMIR. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in efforts to professionalize microfinance practices and promote financial inclusion, a critical component of Rwanda’s economic transformation agenda.

A Vision for Professionalizing Microfinance

The partnership between INES-Ruhengeri, a renowned applied sciences institution, and AMIR, the umbrella body for microfinance institutions in Rwanda, seeks to bridge the gap in skills, governance, and ethics in the microfinance industry.

“This program is not only about equipping professionals with advanced knowledge but also about fostering innovation and ethical practices that will transform the microfinance sector,” said Dr. Uwilingiyimana Charline.

Mr. Jackson Kwikiriza emphasized the sector’s need for trained experts, adding, “This partnership will significantly contribute to the development of competent professionals who can drive financial inclusion and sustainable growth across Rwanda and beyond.”

Key Features of the Collaboration

The MoU outlines a three-year collaboration during which INES-Ruhengeri and AMIR will jointly develop a curriculum tailored to the needs of the microfinance industry. The program will integrate academic rigor with practical insights, supported by research, capacity-building initiatives, and stakeholder engagement.

Highlights of the partnership include:

  • Master of Microfinance Program: A specialized degree offering comprehensive training in microfinance governance, innovation, and ethical practices.
  • Tuition Support: A 22% discount for employees of AMIR-member institutions in good standing, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Research Center: The establishment of a dedicated Microfinance Research Center at INES-Ruhengeri to promote knowledge generation and dissemination.
  • Capacity Building: Workshops, seminars, and forums to enhance professional development.

A Regional Impact

The program is expected to extend its influence beyond Rwanda, serving as a model for microfinance education in the East and Central Africa region. By addressing challenges such as inadequate governance structures and limited innovation, the partnership aims to elevate the sector’s role in achieving sustainable economic development.

A Bright Future Ahead

With this MoU, INES-Ruhengeri and AMIR have laid the foundation for a transformative initiative that will equip microfinance professionals with the skills and knowledge to lead with excellence. This collaboration reinforces Rwanda’s position as a hub for innovation and quality education in Africa.
