INES-Ruhengeri reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and student well-being during the induction of new students on February 6-7, 2025. As part of the ANSWER Project (Advance Inclusion for Students with Disabilities in Higher Education in Rwanda), Mr. William NIYONZIMA and Mr. Fabrice NKURUNZIZA delivered a presentation on the Importance of the INES Student Support Centre (SSC).
During the presentation, Mr. Niyonzima emphasized the role of the centre in fostering inclusivity. “The Student Support Centre is here to ensure that every student, regardless of their disabilities , has an equal opportunity to excel at INES-Ruhengeri,” he stated. The centre collaborates with university faculty and staff to create an accommodating learning environment, enabling students to overcome barriers and succeed academically.
Mr. Nkurunziza highlighted the key services available at the centre, which include counseling, learning support, and advocacy. He also mentioned that assistive technology will be introduced soon to further enhance support for students with disabilities. “Our goal is to provide tailored support to students with disabilities, from academic counseling to career guidance, ensuring their smooth transition into higher education and beyond,” he added.
The Student Support Centre offers a wide range of services designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities. It promotes disability awareness and advocacy, fostering understanding and support within the university community. Ensuring physical accessibility is a key priority, with classroom accommodations such as wheelchair ramps and adjustable desks, as well as designated wheelchair parking spaces to facilitate mobility.
The centre also provides advising and counseling services to support students throughout their academic journey. Academic counseling helps students with course selection, workload management, and academic planning, while career counseling offers internship opportunities, job search strategies, and career development guidance tailored to their specific needs. Additionally, personal counseling and emotional support services are available to assist students in navigating emotional challenges and stress related to their studies, ensuring their overall well-being and success.
Mr. Niyonzima encouraged students to take full advantage of the centre’s offerings. “As you join the INES student community, be aware of the Student Support Centre and join hands with us in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. We are here to assist you in every step of your academic and personal growth,” he remarked.
The induction session provided new students with a deeper understanding of the resources available at INES-Ruhengeri to ensure their academic success and well-being. The university remains committed to empowering all students and fostering an inclusive higher education system in Rwanda.
The SSC, established in December 2023 with funding from the European Commission under the Erasmus+ program, is dedicated to supporting students with disabilities by providing academic, emotional, and practical assistance to ensure equal access to education.
