INES-Ruhengeri Launches New Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology: Enroll for September 2024

Starting September 9, 2024, INES-Ruhengeri, the Institute of Applied Sciences, will launch a new postgraduate program: Master of Science in Food Science and Technology.

This program follows the success of the undergraduate programs in Biotechnologies, which have produced highly competent graduates due to the institute's investment in relevant laboratories and partnerships, providing students with ample practical experience.

This 2-year program offers advanced education in food science and technology, equipping students with skills in innovative research, product development, and quality management within the bio-industries sector.


Admission Requirements

To be admitted to this program, candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree from a nationally or internationally recognized university in one of the following fields, with a minimum grade of 13/20 or its equivalent:

  • Food Science and Technology
  • Food Biotechnology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Biochemistry
  • Biotechnology
  • Chemistry

Candidates should have at least a Second-Class Upper Division in their field of study. Applicants with a Lower Division degree who have at least 3 years of experience in the food industry (e.g., Brewery, Vintage, Dairy, Meat, Vegetables and Fruits, Legumes, and related food sectors) will also be considered. Applicants with qualifications from institutions outside Rwanda that have been approved by the relevant Rwandan body may also be admitted.

The program includes a range of interesting courses:

  • BFS 9101 Advanced Unit Operations: Transport phenomena, Heat and mass transfer in bioreactors (15 credits)
  • BFS 9102 Advanced Cell Biology: Metabolomics and proteomics, Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cell biology, Techniques in protein characterization (15 credits)
  • BFS 9103 Industrial Microbiology and Biomanufacturing: Industrial microbiology, Microbial adaptation to industrial processes, Process adaptation in fermentation-based biomanufacturing (15 credits)
  • BFS 9201 Natural and Synthetic Products: Industrial enzymology, Synthetic and systems biology, Biosynthesis of natural products (15 credits)
  • BFS 9202 Advanced Bioprocess Engineering: Industrial bioreaction engineering, Biomass and metabolites production, Recovery and purification of biological products (15 credits)
  • BFS 9203 Fermentation Technology: Lactic acid fermentation and dairy product production, Alcoholic fermentation, Acetic and vegetable fermentation, Quality management and product packaging, Quality management systems in bioindustry, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) planning and implementation, Principles of food and byproducts packaging (20 credits)
  • BFS 9302 Bioindustry Process Management: Bio-business and process innovation, Bio-industry management and entrepreneurship, Computer-aided process engineering (20 credits)
  • BFS 9303 Advanced Research Methodology: Experimental design and statistical analysis, Instrumental analysis, Ethics and scientific research (20 credits)
  • BFS 9401 Industrial Attachments: Industrial attachments (40 credits)
  • BFS 9402 Thesis: Thesis (60 credits)
