Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Library Management is an option in the Department of Library and Information Science at INES-Ruhengeri.
Library science is
constantly evolving, incorporating new topics like database management,
information architecture and knowledge management, among others. It is an
interesting subject and provides a great opportunity to have the knowledge of
wide variety of information sources. It is an interdisciplinary field that
applies the practices, perspectives, and tools of management, information
technology, education, and other areas to libraries; the collection,
organization, preservation, and dissemination of information resources; and the
political economy of information.
Aims and philosophy of the programme
Bachelor of Science in Information Science and
Library Management programme aims to produce graduates with the distinct specialist
knowledge and skills required to:
i.
Apply the skills and attitudes of infopreneuriship, advocacy, management
and leadership in the information science field.
ii.
Manage information resources through the information life-cycle and
the processes of collection development, representation, organization,
preservation, curation, access, and information dissemination in accordance
with physical, virtual, and technical infrastructure needs.
iii.
Apply appropriate pedagogical and learning theory principles in the design, development,
implementation, and assessment of library instruction and learning that
contribute towards an information and technology literate society.
iv.
Design and employ policies essential for creating and providing
information services and resources guided by the values of patron privacy,
equitable access, intellectual freedom, and ethical use of information.
v.
Possess the skills to respect, engage, and collaborate with a diverse community in order to
advocate for and construct inclusive, meaningful, and participatory library services,
programs and resources.
vi.
Perform and assess research-based practices through the application of information
literacy, inquiry, and research methods including data discovery, analytics and
qualitative measures.
Educational Aims of the programme
The overall aims of the Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Library Management are:
a). To provide students with learning experiences that
help to instil deep interests in information Science; develop broad and
balanced knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts, principles, and
theories related to library, records and archives management.
(b) To equip students with skills essential to carry
out library housekeeping activities and to provide various library and
information and records and archive management services using traditional
techniques as well as Information and Communication Technologies.
(d) To impart the knowledge and skills
base that would enable students to advance at higher levels (Masters and PhD)
in the discipline of Information Science and in related areas or in
multidisciplinary areas that involve Information Science, and to help them develop
a range of generic skills that are relevant to the social and economic
development of the country.

Requirements
ü All students who completed high
school in Math-Physic-Computer Science(MPC), Math-computer-economics(MEC);
Math –Economics-Geography(MEG); History-Economics-Geography(HEG);
English-French-Kinyarwanda(EFK); English-Kinyarwanda-Kiswahili(EKK);
History-Economics-Literature(HEL); Mathematics-computer Science-Economics(MCE)
and social sciences oriented options and who qualified for University
studies with any two passed principal passes at High school (A2
Level)
ü Students with TVT background with at
least two principal passes in major courses: Electronic services; Computer application;
Networking; Computer System; Software Development; office management;
Multi-media and telecommunication
ü Students with teaching
trainings(TTC), Has Diploma in any field related Information Science or library
(A1).
